The Canaan Dog Club is the sole club in the United Kingdom that is registered with the Royal Kennel Club specifically for the promotion and support of the Canaan Dog breed.

The significance of being a Kennel Club registered club can’t be overstated. This recognition not only provides credibility but also aligns the Canaan Dog Club of the United Kingdom with high breeding standards, ensuring that breeders adhere to best practices that promote the health and temperament of the breed. The club’s formal registry status means it is committed to maintaining the breed’s integrity, enhancing recognition, and safeguarding the Canaan dog’s attributes, known for their intelligence, loyalty, and versatility.

Even though the Canaan Dog became a recognised breed in England in 1970, it was quite some time before a breed club was set up. Founded by a group of dedicated enthusiasts, the inaugural meeting of The Canaan Dog Club of the United Kingdom took place on 16 May 1992. The Club’s original aims and objectives were “to promote the interests of the Canaan Dog in Great Britain and safeguard the characteristics of this unique breed”.

It has been an uphill battle for the Canaan Dog Club of the Untied Kingdom with much credit going to Gina Pointing as the first club Secretary and subsequently Ellen Minto who both dedicated significant amounts of their time to ensure the club was run successfully.

The Club has been pivotal in raising awareness about the Canaan dog’s remarkable qualities and heritage and is ever expanding. The club has become much more of a “Hub” for Canaan dog owners, breeders, and prospective future owners, striving to foster a vibrant community around this unique breed globally. In May 2000, the Club held the first International Dog Working party. The Club has manned a breed booth at Discover Dogs for many years which has resulting in a higher profile for the breed with both the public and the Royal Kennel Club.

The club aims to ensure that potential owners are well-informed and prepared for the responsibilities that come with Canaan dog ownership. Additionally, the club assists breeders in focusing on ethical practices and developing breeding programs that promote sound genetics. By advocating for the Canaan dog and supporting responsible breeding, the club plays an essential role in promoting the breed’s unique qualities among dog lovers.

In essence, the initiatives put forth by the Canaan Dog Club of the United Kingdom are designed to promote healthy breeding practices that prioritise the welfare of Canaan dogs within the UK. By fostering a community focused on responsible breeding, the club not only enhances the breed’s quality but also ensures its preservation for future generations.

You do not need to own a Canaan Dog to become a member of the club, we welcome anyone who has an interest in the breed.
