It was all very different back then – I’d hand him over to a nurse in the car park, sign the disclaimer, and wait while they did what was needed. They were always grateful because canine blood donors are incredibly important.
Then one day we got a call. There was an emergency. A dog was actively bleeding and they needed a blood donor immediately. Rubi turned out to be a perfect match, so off we went.
That day, she donated 350ml of blood.
A few days later, the specialist wrote to tell us that Rubi’s donation was potentially life-saving for the other dog. Reading those words made us realise just how important something so simple can be.
Needless to say, both Moshe and Rubi were thoroughly spoilt afterwards – they had definitely earned it! ![]()

Now it’s the next generation’s turn. Malik is being signed up alongside his mum, Teyla, to become blood donors too.
It got me thinking… could your dog give blood?
Just like people, dogs rely on blood donors in emergencies, during major surgery and after serious accidents. One donation can genuinely mean the difference between life and death for another dog.
If your dog is healthy, the right age and weight, it’s worth asking your vet whether they could become a donor. You never know whose best friend they might help save.”
